Buff and Coat - The Beautiful Secret!

Buff and Coat Screening mahogany floor
So what do you say to yourself if want to bring your floors  appearance back to life and the floor is in good structural condition and your happy with the color? Would you say..."Ill just have them refinished."? Well...what if there was a more affordable and faster way to bring the floor back to life? There is....its called a Buff and Coat (Screening) and although most floors are candidates....most flooring professionals keep it a secret. Well we have never been good at keeping secrets. The floor on the left was just worn and tired. All it needed was a little TLC....some light abrasion...cleaned up and a new coat of Polyurethane applied and as you can see in the picture...this floor was "Reborn"

"Do you guys do Tile"?

The Beautiful Inconsistency of stained Pine

Heart Pine southern yellow pine stain coated refinished Oak floor
Older historical home with a mix of Heart Pine and Southern Yellow Pine stained. Stained Pine...you either love it for its unique inconsistent coloring or you hate it because the stain is not as even as Oak (Pictured in the lover right corner) and it looks splotchy. Well....we love so...nah nah.!

Engineered refinished to match

Picture
Many think that an Engineered floor cant be be refinished. Hogwash! With the right technique and experience it can be refinished to look better than the older Engineered. In the photo the upper section of floor was refinished and color matched and a fresh new oil based coating was applied. She liked it so much, the customer now wants the upper section done in the future.

Best of Both

hardwood refinishing, Floor refinishing. iRefinishing Floors Knoxville,Floor Refinishing Knoxville, Exotic hardwood buff and coat screening satin water base polyurethane
Originally the nice folks only wanted a Buff and Recoat but after a unfortunate water leak on the upper section of the floor, that changed a bit. So, we sanded and coated the upper portion with an extremely durable satin two part waterbase and Buffed and Recoated the bottom section. In doing so, the upper portion being an exotic wood was lighter than the lower. No problem....the beauty of Exotic woods and that they will darken over time and both sections will match. Aint wood grand!

Taboo Brazilian Cherry

Brazilian cherry installation hardwood refinishing, Floor refinishing. iRefinishing Floors Knoxville,Floor Refinishing Knoxville,
I know its almost taboo to have an exotic species used as flooring but it looks so darn good. Especially with Trim and Transitions to set it off right!

All that and the Kitchen Table

Man versus Machine

Heart Pine floors Maryville TN Floor Contractor, hardwood refinishing, Floor refinishing. iRefinishing Floors Knoxville,Floor Refinishing Knoxville,
How does a refinished yellow pine floor done by hand stand up to a vanity that was stained and coated by a machine? You call it..

Out with the Old...in with the old

Floor Contractor, hardwood refinishing, Floor refinishing. iRefinishing Floors Knoxville,Floor Refinishing Knoxville,
What happens when varnish gets old...it takes on an orangish coloration. No big deal to sand the floor down but how do you match the color to the older floor that did not get stained? You use Zar "Amber Varnish" stain and satin oil based polyurethane and like magic, good as old!

Scratches? What scratches

Floor Contractor, hardwood refinishing, Floor refinishing. iRefinishing Floors Knoxville,Floor Refinishing Knoxville,
Even the best moving company can make a mistake. Nice newly purchased home on the lake was having their furnishings moved in and a few prefinished boards got scratched. The homeowner and the moving company were a bit worried (understatement) that nothing could be done. We got the call to save the day and that we did. We removed the scratched boards and replaced them individually with matching new boards.

Friend of a Friend is my Friend

Sherwin Williams Burnished Walnut Floor Contractor, hardwood refinishing, Floor refinishing. iRefinishing Floors Knoxville,Floor Refinishing Knoxville,
I...by no means...am a interior decorator so I never pick out the stain color for my customers but every now and then I question a color choice. The customer wanted Sherwin Williams "Burnished Walnut" as her stain choice. I did not think it was a good choice. After applying stain and the industry standard three coats of Water base polyurethane, I am more than happy to admit that I was so WRONG! The floor almosst has a shimmering effect. Its just downright beautiful!

Mr. and a cup of Coffee...SMH

Tellico Village Buff and coat screening
Tellico Village is a good place to work. You meet the most interesting people cause no one....and I mean no one is actually from Tennessee. So here goes....Mr. spills a cup of coffee on his Impregnated floors...(saying that never gets old) Mrs. uses the wrong product to clean. Mrs. calls us....we buff, seal and coat. Mr. was impressed as he carries a cup of coffee back into his office. Best part is that he has represented KISS back in the day and had the photos to prove it!

Cabernet and Natural

Picture
Northerner that fits well in the South was a joy to work with and for while we refinished his home. He chose a Rustoleum fast dry stain called Cabernet. We had our doubts about the stain color choice but after all was said and done...it turned out to be Manly and beautiful. Cabernet downstairs and on steps and Natural Southern Yellow Pine on steps. Oil based Gloss polyurethane.

Allure of Allure

Picture
Many times a laminate just doesnt live up to expectations. This was not one of those times. This product (Allure) lived up to its billing. Made a horrible looking floor underneath feel and look like new money. Hats off to Ms. Fruity for picking the product and our company.

English Chestnut to the rescue

Picture
Newly purchased home with prefinished floors in bad condition. Nothing a lil English Chestnut stain and water base polyurethane couldnt handle.

House Warming Buff and Coat

Picture
When a close friend came to me and asked could I make her daughters "new to her" home floors shine again after previous owner neglect. Just couldn't say no. After scrubbing and wood filling cracks and knot holes, the floors are now the showcase of the home. Plus she threw in a home cooked meal. It doesn't get any better than that.

Bad water leak..Brilliant results

Picture
The Incredible Bowlus had a friend in need. Water leak had buckled and separated wide plank oak floors. After replacing, sanding and color match...."Like it never even happened."

The incredible Bowlus

Picture
Beautiful floors for a great person. Took us some time but in the end, the refinished floors matched the incredible person. Medium brown stain and Satin Water base finish

New steps...Old Home

Picture
Beautiful old home...100 plus...so you can imagine the steps needed some attention. TLC, hand scraping and hand sanding with English Chestnut stain and Water based polyurethane and now..New life to Old wood.

Golden Blend

Picture
ZTC construction called and were honest.....stating that they normally dealt with one of the big boys on the block when it came to wood floor projects. Well, the big boys were a lil busy and wouldn't call back, so he gave us a try. After sanding and blending to match stain of existing floor, we held our own and he was not disappointed. Golden Oak stain and Satin oil based polyurethane.

Go Tornados !!!!!!!!!!!

Picture
Wonderful couple fixing up a home for their children right around the corner from the greatest high school on the planet....Alcoa High! They asked could we sand and refinish the floors and use a compatible stain. Gave us the keys and off they went to the islands and off we went to making the floors beautiful. Upon their return....we showed them what a few local boys could really do.

Acrylic is "NOT" a friend!

Picture
Went to an estimate in Tellico Village. Seems homeowner let a wannabe floor man come in and put an acrylic coat of shine on her prefinished floors. BAD results. She thought a full refinish was necessary...which would cost thousands! I suggested a much more economical fix by chemically stripping floor, then buffing, sealing and applying a coat of Semi gloss oil based polyurethane for thousands less. Several days later after some good old fashioned elbow grease and know how or pockets werent as padded but we did the right thing and the floors are gorgeous.

Tung Oil

Picture
One of the oldest finishes on the market and still just as beautiful. Tung Oil penetrates wood unlike polyurethane and is pretty durable. Beautiful hand rubbed appearance and almost soft to the touch. Great thing...anyone can recoat it...including the average do it yourself when needed. Product used was Waterlox.

Do it for the children...

Picture
What color is this floor? Well, they were black from years and years of Mop and Glo. When you use mop and glo...or however you spell it....it builds layer upon layer. Trapping dirt as it goes until eventually...a black sticky floor in the daycare my daughter grew up in and which she continues to help out with the small children. I finally get a call to see what I can do. We chemically stripped them and put a shine back on them. Kiddies can now run around...if running was allowed.

Re coat to save a life

Picture
Beautiful floor when we left but Mr. had a little more work to do. So, in manly fashion...he protected the floor and used tape to make the drop cloth stay in place. Good man. However, when he went to remove the tape, the finish also was removed. He did try to repair but to save his hide, he called us back to Buff and Recoat. Now they are beautiful again and he is still among the living.

Scratches on prefinished...no big thing

Picture
Company that we are affiliated made a couple of scratches on a prefinished floor. No worries...be happy. Customer had saved some of his wood. After board replacements...Scratches....they gone.

The Real thing

Picture
Done alot of Oak floors that we stained Cherry. Only three or four that were actually Cherry wood. Nothing beats the real thing. Cherry floors with a Satin Oil base finish.

Hello Dear.....crickets

Picture
So, a familiar number pops up on the phone...that I know has got to be my sweetheart. As customary and wisely.....I say...Hello. Turns out is was not my sweetheart. It was a co worker of hers. Crickets for a moment but it all turned out great. Her co worker was the great Mr. Mitch. Pure coincidence. After a good laugh and a lil hard work...Mr. Mitch has beautiful floors. English Chestnut with an oil base finish.

Greatest of compliments

Picture
Wide board Oak refinish for a nice couple. There was extensive floor damage from a previous floor covering. The entire area in photo was black. After board replacements, the customer gave us one of the best compliments he could give...he said, "You guys made the floor looked like it had grown there."

Perfect Match

Picture
Mr. M thought carpet removal, installation and stain to match existing floor that had been done years before was a tall order. When he returned from vacation we had cut it down to size with Red Oak chestnut stain and a satin oil based polyurethane.

All American

Picture
Not seen to often around here but American wide board Beech is incredibly beautiful in its on right. Clear coat Semi gloss oil based polyurethane.

Tile is Tile

Picture
We were asked by a contractor if we could handle carpet tile glue down installation. Our response....Tile is Tile.

Sweet Gunstock

Picture
Those two words typically don't go together but this time they do. First home for customer who by far is the nicest and kindest customer we have ever had and we have had some great ones. She was even sweeter after my cleaner spilled a solvent on the floor and the room had to be redone. Yes, we make mistakes! She is such good people...and Oh...the floors are great now also. Gunstock with water based satin polyurethane.

Watch that first step...

Picture
Cant take credit for the installation but the finishing is all ours. Incredibly dark and beautiful stain with a semi gloss varnish

A little cover up

Picture
Nice folks getting into the landlord business but an ugly floor stood in the way. So after repairs, filling, sanding and coating.....they are off to the races. Red Mahogany with an oil based polyurethane.

Lastly, look closely near the lower left hand side of the picture. Although the doggy spot did not come out completely through sanding, the darker stain choice did mask it well.

He loves Golden Oak

Picture
Another floor done for one of our investors that flip homes for a living. When asked what color stain, there was no guessing....Golden Oak is the only answer. Im just gonna stop asking. They are beautiful. Golden Oak with water base polyurethane.

What was...

Picture
An old damp basement was turned into beautiful living area after leveling of the cement and nice glue down prefinished cork tile.

You never know whats under there

Picture
House was built in the 50's. To say that it had several other flooring types on top of the hardwood....would be an understatement. To say that the hardwood were a lil on the ugly side....also an understatement. To say they are gorgeous now....Red oak with Dark Walnut oil based Satin finish.

Let Oak be Oak

Picture
Wonderful couple with alot of flooring space. He initially wanted a buff and coat but moma wanted a full refinish. Guess who won. Also, coating with a stain was an issue but after consultation, they decided to let Oak look like Oak. Just a clear oil based satin polyurethane.

They did not have the time to do it themselves so we were called into install glue down cork tile flooring. They could not be happier.

Find the Crack

Picture
Small hairline cracks in tile that were a little unsightly. A little epoxy and fine grit sandpaper and no one is the wiser. Take a look and try to locate which line is the repair and which lines came with the tile.

Oak and Cherry

Picture
Oak Floors brought back to life with a Minwax Cherry and Satin two part waterbase polyurethane for durability.

Wax on.....peel off

Picture
45 year old square parquet floors that have been waxed annually, cannot simply be coated with oil based polyurethane. Hard lesson for first contractor to learn once the floor began peeling. No worries....a full refinish and a few precautionary steps for adhesion topped off with a high endurance satin water base polyurethane and they will look great for years to come.

Some assembly required

Picture
Hometown customer that was tired of looking at the sun damaged prefinished floors that were once beautiful and full of color...just like it still was under the rugs. We came in and demo'd the sun faded boards and installed/weaved matching prefinished boards.

Full refinish not necessary

Picture
Many times a floor does not require a full refinish to bring back shine and longevity. This floor only required a cleaning and recoat to enhance its resale value at a fraction of the cost and time of a full refinish. Prefinished floor with a little stain added to oil base poly to reduce sun damage.

Cherry..Cherry

Its still someones HOME!

Picture
Nice folks from the other side of TN called us in to refinish the bamboo floors and install new Bamboo in the Master bedroom. Mostly because of previous cabin renters severely scratching the floor. Well.....4 coats of high end satin water base Polyurethane and super hard prefinished Bamboo in Master bedroom....."They will now take a lickin and keep on tickin."

It is a "Great cabin in the Smokies"...now!

Picture
Warped and crowned Southern Yellow pine is what we walked into but  level smooth clear coated oil based floors are what we walked out of.....

Mosaic away

Picture
New homeowner loved the mission style kitchen the previous owner left them but the small 6X6 mosaic tiles placed throughout the floor.....ehh not so much. So we removed them and used leftover tile from years back and matched the grout and removed a hideous mosaic/tile bullnose and replaces with a wide wooden turnboard and subtle transition from wood to tile. There is beauty in simplicity.

Fireplace Facelift

Picture
Previous homeowner did a do it yourself and in the end did it to himself. Luckily, great customer from "BAMA" decided to do it right. Mosaic tile, Crown molding, Trim and "All the Marble"....aint she a beaut?!

Up and Down

Picture

Ms. D

Picture
Beautiful home in the great little city of Alcoa owned by no other than Ms. D. We installed tile and engineered flooring and the results....well if Ms. D is happy, then the rest just don't matter.

Too High

Picture
Kentucky folks aint all that bad but apparently they love heights. Beautiful laminate floor laid in a cabin on the side of a mountain but son....it was too high. I dont know what made me happier...how the floor turned out or when I was leaving.

Makeover

Picture
Small project turned into a full makeover of entire home three weeks later but after carpet was removed and new unfinished red oak was installed, sanded and stained with Zar Early American and top coated with an oil based Satin polyurethane its one step closer to completion. They were extremely happy with floors but they may have been happier that everything was almost done.

Romeo's huge dog house

Picture
Original flooring company installed the wood but used a Tung Oil finish. Being a dark exotic hardwood that type of finish showed every scuff and scratch. So we came in and sanded the steps and flooring down and applied one of the hardest commercial two part polyurethanes on the market. It want scratch any more. Oh...Romeo was the 70 lb Doberman that ran the house. He was happy also.

New color...new floor

Picture
Great customer who was referred to us. After color sampling, he decided to go with a new Minwax color "Weathered Oak". Great choice. The stain has hints of Grey in it. Topped with a satin water base.

Flat to a High beautiful note

Picture
Flush vents that came from the manufacturer both unfinished and flat.  We could have just finished the vents and installed them but they would not have matched the floors appearance and feel. Developed new technique to give the flat vents the feel of handscraped and spray coated them to match flooring. Turned out so great, submitted process to NWFA.

Picture
We were contracted to install Tongue and Groove pine on the wall of a cabin. Not much different than installing the wood on the floors. After installing over 1300 sq of wood and trim and finishing with a Super Matte water base polyurethane, it turns out our vertical is just as good as our horizontal.

Cabin in the Smokies

Picture
Great customer bought a beautiful home in Pigeon Forge. However, the previous owners did not take good care of the spiral pine staircase. After sanding out deep scratches and abuse and coating with a two part satin water base polyurethane, They were returned to their formal beauty for years to come.

Pet Stains....

Picture
Unfortunately, there is almost no way to remove pet stains and dark deep scratches completely but using a darker stain can minimize their appearance.

Reading isnt the only thing fundamental....

Picture
Beautiful and colorful floors in one of Knoxville's favorite bookstores children area will definitely help with learning and enjoyment.

Buff and Coat (Screening)

Picture
Beautiful home with now beautiful floors. Semi gloss oil base

Bad situation Good results

Picture
Customers were as nice as the home. However, the builder used thin engineered for their flooring and sanded it on top of that. Customer wanted to refinish but due to the thinness of the wood only a buff and coat could be done. High traffic areas were lightened and floor coated with Satin Waterbase polyurethane.

Shame on him

Picture
Even though she was from Kentucky....her builder did her wrong. Beautiful house but he had some fly by night come in and install sheet vinyl in her home and on top of that, it peeled at the seams. After years of living with the mess, she decided to have it done right. She called us. Found her a beautiful Porcelain Slate lookalike tile at a great price. We then took out the old vinyl, laid underlayment and tile and stained quarter round to match her beautiful cabinets.

Right hand Man

Picture
Customer in Jefferson City that was living with storm damage for awhile. Only a portion of the floor was effected by water damage but on top of that a waxy cleaner had been used. My right hand man not only sanded a portion of the floor but did a perfect stain match to the rest of the floor. Cleaned, buffed and coated. Hats off to Darrin.

IFT is next to cleanliness and cleanliness is...

Picture

Slate or Tile?

Picture

Veto Power

Picture
Good contractor friend who never had any of the homes refinished hired us to come in and redo 100 year old pine floors and vinyl. Once we finished, he panicked and wanted to cover them up because he thought they were ugly...I said ok but you better ask your wife and real estate agent first. Two hours later phone rings...he had been vetoed not once but twice. They said the floors were beautiful. He may still be in the doghouse.

Painting - comes naturally

Picture
Painting is so much like staining and coating a floor...I decided to add it to our services. Ugly laminate cabinet doors in a dental office now have a new beautiful look. More to come.

Vinyl B-Gone

Picture
Previous customers that had me and the team install and finish their hardwood floors decided it was time to do away with their vinyl in the kitchen. Some hammering and sanding and here you go. Gunstock stain with Oil based Semi Gloss.

Old Mill...New look

Picture

Red Oak with Woodfill

Picture
This a Wood filled floor before sanding. Wood fill is to older wood floors as grout is to tile.  Wood fill or sometimes commonly called Trowel fill, fills small to medium gaps in wooden floors that have opened up over time. Wood filling a floor is the difference between a good floor person and a very good floor person. Now not all floors need wood fill but many do and if the floor contractor includes this in their overall estimate like we do, then they are a very good floor person.
